Wilderness Survival Kit For The Wayward Outdoorsman

Wilderness Survival Kit For The Wayward Outdoorsman

" KEEP IT SIMPLE "

Most people are stranded or lost for no more than 24 hours, knowing that it becomes easy to weed out and only carry exactly what you need to survive a night in the woods away from civilization. Norden gear lives by this rule and it is reflected into the design philosophy from our UCR harness to the Ascent blade. There’s a saying, “ounces equal pounds and pounds equal pain.” You don’t want to build out an extravagant wilderness survival kit only to weigh you down, take up room in your pack and ultimately leave in the truck or at home. These tools should be reliable, lightweight, rugged and easily operated with simple motor functions.

As hunters and outdoorsman, we naturally find ourselves in harsh unforgiving environments and situations. Most of our focus in gear choices is on the “performance” aspect of our given activity. It’s a lot more fun to buy a high dollar scope or expensive pack than it is to focus on water purification or a first aid item - after all, we hope to never have to need those things.

One of the reasons these things often get left out of our prepper gear, packs, or pockets is simply because they’re too big or too complicated. There’s a simple rule to live by when it comes to most gear choices:

YOUR TRUSTED WILDERNESS KNIFE - THE ASCENT

Any good wilderness survival kit is centered around your most valuable tool, your wilderness knife. The Ascent Knife design is not just intended for hunters, but rather any outdoor dwelling person that needs one good tool. Hiking, hunting, fishing, backpacking, mountain biking, rock climbing, snowboarding, dirt biking and any other outdoor activity a person does can benefit from a quality wilderness knife that is compact enough to always be on them, but robust enough to be relied on when the chips are down. With the blade design and materials put into the Ascent lineup, you can take care of virtually any task required in a survival situation. Batoning kindling, cutting up game, cutting rope, creating shelters and fashioning other tools are just a few of the tasks you can rely on an Ascent to help you accomplish. The bottom line is the weight and size are right, to where it will actually be with you when you need it most. Thats why we also offer the Ascent Mini knife and Ascent Knife XL for various size options, depending on our outdoor activity.

OTHER PREPPER GEAR & SURVIVAL TOOLS YOU WILL NEED:

Aside from your knife, there are few key items that should be with you when venturing into wild, inhospitable places.

  1.  A way to make fire is high on that list, with that being your next most valuable tool or resource.
  2. A good lighter, stormproof matches or compact fire steel matched with some waterproof tinder tabs can help you get a blaze going when you really need it.
  3.  A water filter straw
  4. Space blanket for shelter
  5. Few feet of paracord
  6. A compact flashlight can really round out the top tools that will help you survive almost any short-term survival situation.
  7. Have a compass to, at minimum, give you general directions especially when trying to navigate in low visibility scenarios. Lastly but not least
  8. First aid items for bleeding trauma are good to have. Clotting sponges or QuikClot are easy to carry and highly effective.

For more severe injuries, such as extremities with major blood vessels bleeding, you need some sort of tourniquet.

The wayward outdoorsman always comes prepared. Here at Norden Knives, we not only think about what kind of outdoor gear you will need but how well it will perform in harsh climates. Our multi-versatile wilderness knives are sure to be one of your favorite tools this season!
